Local hero honored by friends, family and tribe

Sen. Byron Dorgan congratulates Andrew Shaw as he presented the many medals Shaw won during the Korean War. This special ceremony was held in August of 2007 in front of the new Tribal Courts Building of the Spirit Lake Nation. Andy Shaw served his country in the Korean War and spent 39 months as a prisioner of war. Thursday, July 24 his family, friends and tribe members gathered to honor him by naming the dance arbor at the Spirit Lake Pow Wow Grounds for him. Fellow veterans led the procession around the arena in the moving ceremony which began with the presentation of an eagle feather to Shaw to recognize his extraordinary heroism. Tribal Chairwoman, Myra Pearson, spoke to Shaw and all the vets thanking them for our freedom. Last August in a special ceremony Sen. Byron Dorgan presented Shaw with the medals he earned while...
