Russia may consider Cuba for possible refueling sites for bombers

By Alfonso Chardy and Tom Lasseter / McClatchy Newspapers Friday, July 25, 2008 - Added 4m ago Moscow and Washington have moved aggressively to tamp down speculation over a possible deployment of Russian nuclear-capable bombers to Cuba, but the concerns haven’t gone away. The Russian newspaper Izvestia yesterday reported that Russian bomber crews have visited Cuba to survey for possible refueling stopovers. The newspaper report, which could not be confirmed, came on the same day that a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman denied an earlier Izvestia report about alleged Russian plans to deploy strategic aircraft in Cuba. Izvestia’s reports sparked a flurry of speculation spanning the Florida Straits. It's as clear as the nose on your face, that this is a Mexican Stand-Off. The U.S. is no longer in any position to tell other countries what thet can or cannot do. If Russia opens new airbases all over Latin America, the U.S. will be surrounded by the Russians and what they attempted to do by building the Missile Shield around Russia, will become a huge joke. Let's face it, America's heyday is over. It's time for some other nation to take the helm in world affairs. Russia is now better equipped than the U.S. to deal international affairs, and the U.S. must now take a back seat.
