by John Perkins The United States Department of Agriculture reports that total commercial red meat production during June was 4.05 billion pounds, down 4% from May's 4.222 billion, but up 1% from the June 2007 total of 4.028 billion pounds. For the year to date, commercial red meat production is 25.043 billion pounds, 6% more than the 23.578 million produced in the first half of 2007. June 2008 had 21 weekdays and 4 Saturdays, one fewer Saturday than June 2007. Beef production came out at 2.263 billion pounds, 5% less than the May total of 2.380 billion pounds and 4% lower than June 2007's 2.349 billion pounds. January to June 2008 production was 13.269 billion pounds, 3% ahead of 2007's pace. June's slaughter was pegged at 2.956 million head, 6% under May and down 4% from June 2007.
