Contaminated recycling persists

It is no easy task to take out the trash. Recyclables discarded in blue bins are taken to the material recovery facility at 460 40th St. E. "The contractor (Crown Shred) is responsible to sort non-recyclable materials, to a degree," said Duane Mohn, manager of North Central Saskatchewan Waste Management. When health and safety issues arise, Crown Shred employees can refuse to sort a load. Mohn gave the example of a load of paper for recycling received in May that contained discarded syringes and condoms. "Everything we do here is by hand," said Cory Shaw, the facility manager. A small amount of garbage is expected, said Mohn. From Tuesday until Thursday, 24 500-gallon containers had been filled with non-recyclable trash, and were awaiting transport to the Prince Albert landfill.
