Largest China-based B2B operator Alibaba enters Taiwan market

Alibaba, the largest China-based operator of B2B (business to business) e-commerce services, at a July 24 press conference announced the formal establishment of a Taiwan branch to tap the local market. The target client base in the Taiwan market is small- and medium-size businesses (SMBs), according to Alibaba CEO David Wei. An approximate 1.2 million SMBs in Taiwan account for 97.7% of the market's total number of enterprises. However, Taiwan's SMBs generate only 18% of Taiwan's total export value, lower than the corresponding figures in China, South Korea and India, Wei indicated. This implies there is a considerably large market potential for Alibaba to help Taiwan-based SMBs promote exports, Wei pointed out.
