Ripon man reaches plea deal on gun charge

FOND DU LAC, Wis. - A 52-year-old Ripon man has reached a deal with prosecutors to avoid trial after a teen was accidentally shot and killed at his home. Fond du Lac County District Attorney Michael O'Rourke says Michael Leber was scheduled for trial Friday but instead is expected to enter a plea of no contest or guilty to a charge of possessing a short-barreled rifle. Ninetee-year-old Evan Tolsma of Brandon is serving six months in jail for accidentally killing 18-year-old Jason Perry of Omro as the two played with an AK-47 assault rifle at Leber's home. Tolsma and Perry were best friends and visiting Leber's son. Police responding to the shooting found a shotgun with an illegal sawed-off barrel. That is the gun Leber is accused of possessing.
