WAYNESVILLE, N.C. -- The widow of a state trooper who was shot to death on a North Carolina highway says her premature son's plight is helping her deal with the sudden loss of her husband. Trooper David Shawn Blanton Jr., 24, was killed June 17 during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 near Canton. The man charged with killing him was scheduled in Haywood County Superior Court on Friday for a hearing. Edwardo Wong III, 37, of Ormond Beach, Fla., is charged with first-degree murder and other charges. Michaela Blanton asked for prayers for her son Tye, who was born seven weeks prematurely, and said she feels her husband's presence when she is with the baby, the Asheville Citizen-Times reported Friday.
