PERPENDICULAR five-inch high kerbs on new footpaths, roads, traffic islands, roundabouts and as artistic curves and angles, are one of the greatest hazards confronting motorists today. I have spoken to victims of these monstrosities, as well as with the people who have to handle the aftermath and repair some of the damage caused by them. Traffic-calming islands constructed in the centre of 100kph straight stretches of motorway, where the width of the road is suddenly reduced to the point a vehicle can just glide through, are ridiculous. The most frightening and dangerous aspect is the height of the kerbs at both sides, combined with the huge jutting-out concrete island one faces.
