LONDON (MarketWatch) -- British Prime Minister Gordon Brown's Labour Party was thrown into another round of soul-searching Friday after losing one of its safest parliamentary seats to the Scottish Nationalist Party in a special election. The defeat amid the government's deep unpopularity has renewed questions about whether Brown will be able to hang on as prime minister to lead the Labour Party in the next general election, which must take place no later than 2010. Labour strategists had hoped party loyalty would trump growing economic gloom to eke out a victory in the hardscrabble Glasgow East constituency and end a string of election defeats at the parliamentary and local level.
