MANATEE -- A small, metal box not much larger than a Rubik's Cube sitting on Chuck Schofield's desk is setting the industry standard in aviation. And it's being manufactured right here in Manatee County. Schofield is senior vice president of Radiant Power Corp. in the Parkland Center industrial park near U.S. 301 and 63rd Avenue East. The box is called the Sentinel and supplies backup power to cockpit voice recorders, often called "black box" recorders, in the event an airplane's electrical system fails. In March, the Federal Aviation Administration mandated that all aircraft with 10 or more seats install backup power systems for their cockpit voice recorders.
