Beleaguered British prime Minister Gordon Brown faced further woes Friday after his party was defeated in a special election in one of its strongholds. The Scottish National Party overturned a big Labour majority to take the seat of Glasgow East, a working-class area that is longtime Labour territory. Voters were replacing Labour lawmaker David Marshall, who resigned for health reasons. The Scottish nationalists say the result of Thursday's vote is a political earthquake. Labour won Glasgow East by more than 13,000 votes in the 2005 national election, but this time a huge voter swing saw SNP candidate John Mason take it by 365 votes.
