To prevent future spikes in food prices By Veronica Uy INQUIRER.net MANILA, Philippines -- The government has asked the United Nations (UN) and the World Food Program (WFP) to help set up either a regional or a global food stockpile program to help prevent spikes in food prices such as the one experienced recently. At Friday's UNESCO media forum, Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the global food crisis saw food riots break out in the world's poorest countries. "This year we saw the inability of the global family to put in place global food stock piles. If there is such a system in place, there would be no panic…[Food purchases] would be done sans political and geopolitical [considerations]…It would take the speculative aspect out of the situation," he said.
