Goldsboro, N.C. — Wayne County Sheriff’s officials charged a Goldsboro man with murder after deputies found his girlfriend dead Wednesday. Herman Phillip Best came to the sheriff’s office around 3:15 p.m. to report that he and his girlfriend, Martha Cook Carter, of 114 Kevin Lane, had been in an argument. Best told deputies that his girlfriend was injured and that he wanted deputies to check on her, authorities said. Deputies went to the address and found Carter dead.
