Posted to the web 24 July 2008 Ifeatu Agbu Port Harcourt Recent events in the Niger Delta show more than ever before that the Nigerian state has no option than to confront head-on the challenges of underdevelopment and its attendant crisis in the oil-rich region. The Sir Henry Willinks Commission hit the nail on the head as far back as 1958 when it recommended that the Niger Delta should be given special attention because of its difficult terrain. Since then, feeble attempts have been made to give effect to the commission's recommendations. Several other similar commissions, conferences, summits or whatever other names they were called, have given the same panacea that suffered the same fate of abandonment.
