Uganda: MPs Throw Out Minister, Seek Crisis Session

Posted to the web 24 July 2008 Madinah Tebajjukira Kampala MPs on the defence and internal affairs committee yesterday threw out state minister for internal affairs Matia Kasaija because he declined to brief them on the arrest of the Mengo officials. It started when the committee chairperson, Matthias Kasamba (NRM), asked Kasaija to explain the whereabouts of the officials and why they had not been produced in court since their arrest on Friday. "The country is concerned about the arrest of the Mengo officials. Everyone is worried since their whereabouts are not certain," Kasamba said. But the minister, who came with a team of about 40 officials to defend his policy statement, explained that his ministry had prepared a comprehensive report which would be released to the media today.
