Thursday, July 24, 2008 I remember, as a young major in the late 80s, I was posted to a forward post in Jammu and Kashmir. Rajiv Gandhi and Benazir Bhutto had just been sworn in as the prime ministers of their respective countries, and the amazing similarity between the two was the talking point of many a drawing room discussion -- both were young, good-looking, Oxford-educated, children of prominent politicians who had met violent deaths, and both had great dreams for their countries. I remember telling my general: "Sir, with Rajiv and Benazir now at the helms, I'm sure we will not have to endure another winter at Siachen". How naïve are the young!
