The funding, provided in an amendment to the bill by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), would go to nonprofit groups that offer counseling to families on the brink of foreclosure and also try to head off bad loans by helping prospective homeowners. "We are trying to reach out to these people," McCarthy said yesterday. "We know that sometimes people are embarrassed to ask for help."
