ASHANTI HIRED BY LONG ISLAND TOURISM BOARD: Singer to promote her hometown as official ambassador.

*In a ceremony held Tuesday, R&B singer Ashanti was appointed one of nine tourism ambassadors expected to promote her hometown of Nassau County on New York's Long Island. The tourism campaign pitches Nassau as "The Island Next Door" and is targeted at visitors to the city. Ashanti was born and raised in Glen Cove, located on Long Island's North Shore. During Tuesday's news conference at Rockefeller Center in Manhattan, she was given an orange blazer with a tourism patch by County Executive Thomas Suozzi to signify her new position. The music star said it's "amazing" to be asked to "give something back to the community."
