Economy forces inmate meal costs higher

Jail's work farm may help cut food-pact costs BY SUSANNE CERVENKA • FLORIDA TODAY • July 24, 2008 Johnny Lee Holder hoed a row of okra at the Brevard County inmate work farm, tearing out the weeds that would otherwise choke out the growing vegetable. "I'll give it a couple weeks, and we should have blooms," said Holder, 61, who is serving time for a drunken-driving conviction by working at the farm for eight hours a day before returning to his Cocoa home. "It'll be a good vegetable." Soon, that okra and a cornucopia of other vegetables grown at the farm will help Brevard County Sheriff's Office cut the cost of feeding inmates at the jail.
