Viewpoint: Don't let the zoo get away from us

Ginni Lemaster • July 24, 2008 The Zoo Northwest Florida is an amazing educational resource for all of Northwest Florida. Hundreds of excited school children come through our side gate each spring and fall on their annual school outings. ZOOCamps are going on now and will continue through the first week of August. Recently one 6-year-old camper was surprised to learn that alligators can have as many as 3,000 teeth in their lifetime. "Wow," she said, "that's a tooth fairy's nightmare!" In addition to serving the educational needs of our local children, the zoo is a major tourist attraction for the Northwest Florida area. We are the only large zoo between New Orleans and Jacksonville. We are hoping to gain both publicity and some funding from the local Tourist Development Councils.
