Upstate N.Y. could face meth comeback

Schumer says DEA must step up efforts at Canadian border. By Erin Kelly • WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer warned Wednesday that a spike in methamphetamine production in Canada might reverse dramatic gains made by upstate New York law enforcement officials in reducing local production of the illegal, highly addictive drug. Police seizures of meth labs in the Southern Tier and other upstate areas have declined 66 percent during the past year as strong police efforts have shut down many labs, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. But a production surge in Canada threatens that success by sending the drug south into upstate New York, DEA officials say.
