Fernald begins 3-year sentence BY JOHN A. TORRES • FLORIDA TODAY • July 24, 2008 Shutter scam artist Andrew Fernald apologized Wednesday to several of his victims, promising to pay them back, then was taken from the courthouse to start serving a three-year prison sentence. Judge John Harris also sentenced Fernald to 12 years of probation and ordered the 50-year-old to pay back the $32,000 he still owes those who contracted him to install hurricane shutters. Fernald previously pleaded guilty to organized fraud, a felony, for scamming 25 mostly elderly customers out of more than $50,000 in unfinished hurricane shutter contract work.
