US hints at sanctions amid stalled Zimbabwe talks

The US hinted that it will impose more sanctions on Mugabe and his inner circle Manelisi Dubase As the Zimbabwean talks stalled for the second time yesterday, the US hinted that it will impose more sanctions on President Robert Mugabe and his inner circle. Earlier this week, European Union (EU) foreign ministers extended sanctions, to include 37 more officials close to Mugabe and the ruling Zanu-PF. The US and the EU believe that targeted sanctions might put necessary pressure on Mugabe to negotiate in good faith. Both the Europeans and Americans have been staunch supporters of a failed initiative to impose UN sanctions against Mugabe and his top civilian and military officials.
