Fiji's self-appointed prime minister met on Thursday with his finance minister behind closed doors, amid speculation the country faces a fresh political crisis. The Fiji Times reported on its website that the South Pacific nation's interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, met on Thursday morning with his Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry. The newspaper said that earlier on Thursday a senior member of the interim government running Fiji had been asked to step down, although it is not known who that person is. There were unsubstantiated rumours last week that Bainimarama, who seized power in a military coup in 2006, was planning to stand aside as Fiji's prime minister and take over as president from the ageing Ratu Josefa Iloilo.
