By Eilish O'Regan Thursday July 24 2008 Eilish O'Regan Health Correspondent Outbreaks of mumps have jumped by 600pc this year, prompting calls for risk groups to be vaccinated against the disease. Figures reveal there have been 387 reported cases of mumps reported so far compared to just 65 for the same period in 2007. The figures come as a new report will show an increase in the uptake of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine, with 85pc of children now getting the jab compared to 70pc six years ago. Outbreaks of infectious diseases like mumps and measles can surge and fall every few years, particularly if they take hold among groups who have not been vaccinated in childhood.
