Media's treatment of women focus of self-empowerment class

Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jul. 23--Starting Thursday, girls and young women in Union County have a chance to learn how to stand up for themselves and define their own boundaries. That day, Shelter From the Storm kicks off yet another session of Project HOW, a popular self-empowerment class for women ages 13-20. This time around, the focus will be on the media and how it treats women. "We live in an age where young girls and women -- and men, for that matter -- are exposed to thousands of media advertising images a day," said Sexual Assault Victims Advocate Chris Martin. "Many of the messages are exploitative and demeaning, and they normalize violence." Project HOW (for Healthy Outlooks for Women) is funded by a grant from the U.S. Center for Disease Control.
