SINGAPORE_The United States praised Southeast Asia's main grouping as a forum to "rally and try to solve problems," despite its lack of success in mediating an escalating Thai-Cambodia border dispute. A day after failing to persuade Thailand to accept regional mediation, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations' 10 foreign ministers on Wednesday held back-to-back meetings on security issues with Asia-Pacific powers, including the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and Russia. The five countries involved in negotiations with North Korea over its nuclear program also squeezed in a first-ever meeting of their foreign ministers, including U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
