Fiber is best known for its ability to relieve constipation, but there are many other, less talked-about benefits to fiber. Current recommendations from the National Academy of Sciences for daily fiber intake are 21-25 grams for women and 30-38 grams for men. The average American receives only about 10 grams daily. Fiber is separated into two categories: soluble and insoluble. Insoluble fiber can help alleviate constipation by increasing stool bulk and moving stools through the digestive system faster.
