MSU junior Jack Newman wins an invite to 2009 Masters BY CARLOS MONARREZ • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • July 23, 2008 As he got closer to the end of his victory in the U.S. Amateur Public Links, Jack Newman had to clear his head of one thought that kept creeping into his mind. The Masters -- and the traditional invitation it extends to the Publinx champion. "It was on my mind part of the day," said the incoming junior at Michigan State, "but as soon as it popped into my head I had to get rid of it because I knew that at any given point you can lose your thoughts with going to the Masters. So as soon as it popped into my head, I told myself that I still had work to do. It was exciting thinking about it, though. It gets you nervous, though, I'll tell you that."
