Farm workers to get 340 houses

Thandy Ndlovu Nelspruit - Mpumalanga's housing department will build 340 houses for farm workers at a cost of R16m this year. The houses will be built as part of the Farm Worker Housing Programme in the Mbombela, Nkomazi, Thaba Chweu, Umjindi, Govan Mbeki, Msukaligwa, Delmas and Emalahleni municipal areas, said department spokesperson Simphiwe Kunene. "We are striving to restore dignity to farm labourers who have been staying in sub-human conditions for the better part of their lives," he said. "It is expected some farm workers will have homes of their own by the end of the year," he added. He said the department was negotiating with farmers to either sell or allocate part of their land for housing.
