The Government remains confident it can pass its Emissions Trading Scheme before the election. But Leader of the House Michael Cullen is admitting they do not yet have the political support. With Parliament due to rise for the election no later than October 6, the pressure is on to lure the Greens, New Zealand First or the Maori Party for their support. National's Nick Smith says the Select Committee was given only three days to consider over 1,000 amendments to the scheme. He says that was on the basis that the Government urgently wanted it returned to the House, and it has subsequently stalled for the past seven weeks.
