Study Finds Debt up Among College Students

By Elio Valenzuela - 23 Jul 2008 Utah bankruptcies have increased compared to previous years, according to a new report, and BYU students are being affected by it. College students are no strangers to debt. According to a July press release from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, bankruptcy filling by Utah residents and businesses increased 42 percent in the first six months of the year. According to Project Student on Debt, a Web site dedicated to analyzing and reporting information regarding student debt, the amount of debt incurred by students all over the country has increased over the past decade at notable rates. As of 2006, BYU students had an average debt at the time of graduation of $13,714, with a proportion of 30 percent of the student body in debt at the time of graduation, according to the site.
