BY RICK NEALE • FLORIDA TODAY • July 22, 2008 MELBOURNE — On Sept. 16, the Melbourne City Council will reconsider Daily Bread’s controversial plan to build a new soup kitchen. Tonight, council members postponed discussion at Daily Bread’s request. The nonprofit organization’s board of directors is weighing various options, which include developing city-owned parcels off NASA Boulevard and Harper Road. In mid-May, council members denied first reading of a rezoning ordinance for a vacant lot next door to Daily Bread’s current Fee Avenue soup kitchen. The charitable group wants to construct a Key West-style facility three times as large as the present site to serve free meals to the needy — but neighbors and shopkeepers object.
