Williams sisters, Davenport pull out of East West Bank Classic

CARSON — With the Beijing Olympics less than three weeks away, three of the top-10 female tennis players in the world will get their final tuneups at the 2008 East West Bank Classic this week at The Home Depot Center in Carson. The event is headlined this year by No. 2 Jelena Jankovic, No. 8 Anna Chakvetadze and No. 9 Dinara Safina. Defending champion Ana Ivanovic is not in this year's field. A rash of late dropouts and injury withdrawals has watered down the field, forcing some last-minute seeding changes. Serena Williams and Venus Williams, ranked No. 5 and No. 7 respectively, were forced to withdraw because of knee troubles. No. 4 Svetlana Kuznetsova also withdrew because of injury.
