London shares close weak, off lows; NY up;Vodafone, Enterprise Inns falls UPDATE (AFX)

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - UK blue chips closed weaker, albeit off lows as Wall Street recovered from opening losses, with telecoms giant Vodafone (LSE: VOD.L - news) and Enterprise Inns (LSE: ETI.L - news) still remaining the major casualties after releasing disappointing trading updates. At close, the FTSE 100 index was down 40.2 points at 5,364.1 off a low of 5,282.8, while the FTSE 250 index was 62.9 points weaker at 8,982.6. In the United States, Wall Street was higher recovering from session lows as a fall in the oil price offset earlier weakness after Wachovia reported disappointing quarterly results. At London's close, the DJIA index was up 55 points at 11,522.4.
