ROCKPORT (July 22): Siegfried “Walter” Oesterlin, 77, died June 9, 2008, at Penobscot Bay Medical Center. Walter was born May 29, 1931, in New York City, N.Y., a son of the late Ernst and Gertrude Sakmann Oesterlin. He attended local schools and continued his education from 1957 to 1961 at Southern Connecticut State College, where he earned his bachelor's degree in education. On Aug. 11, 1952, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska. He was honorably discharged from the Army on Aug. 10, 1954, as a corporal. He was employed at Southern New England Telephone and by the state of Connecticut as a conservation officer and as director of security for the Regional Water Authority.
