After the former football player Pat Tillman was killed on April 22, 2004, in Afghanistan, his mother, Mary Tillman, set out to discover the circumstances of his death. But she had no Virgil to guide her through this hellish underworld. Instead, a "casualty assistance liaison," "mortuary affairs personnel" and officers armed with PowerPoint offered assistance. She found out that families of slain soldiers may wait weeks or months to receive basic information about their deaths. In the case of Pat Tillman, the cause was said to be enemy fire.
