Re-enactors bitten by more than history bug By Ed Byrne • Gannett Wisconsin Media • July 20, 2008 POTTER — If the encampment by Civil War re-enactors at Potter Firemen's Park on Saturday is any indication, the Confederate States of America lost because of mosquitoes. The Union soldiers and their camp followers were on the dry and high grounds at the park, and the Confederates were camped down by the marsh along with millions of bloodthirsty mosquitoes. "Them skeeters was so bad I nary slept an hour at a time all night," on woman said, declining to step out of character. Captain Potter Days is celebrated one weekend in July each summer, with Civil War re-enactors coming from all over the upper Midwest to recreate the War Between the States.
