PAYCHECK PEEKING Here's how to check executive salaries in publicly traded companies: • Find the proxy report: It's a document filed by a publicly traded company before an annual meeting to provide information about matters that will be voted on by shareholders, such as board members and the hiring of auditing firms. It also discloses how much a small group of its top executives earned, including salaries, bonuses, stock options and other benefits. • Where is it?: Publicly traded companies must file their proxies with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which posts them on the Internet. Go to sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/webusers.htm, and click on Companies & Other Filers. Enter the name of the company. In the list of filings the proxies are forms DEF 14 and DEF 14A.
