Jul 19 2008 By David McCarthy JOHN DALY roared away from Birkdale in despair last night after carding an EIGHTY NINE that left his embarrassed followers staring in disbelief. The Wild Thing lived up to his name as he hacked and whacked his way around the Lancashire links in a total of 29-over-par for the two days he played. Daly, who won The Open at St Andrews in 1995, took 49 shots on the back nine - including a nine at the par-four 13th. The American left the course without explaining why things had gone so wrong after the first five holes, which he negotiated in a respectable one-over-par. The next 13 were completed in 18-over - the kind of score a 10- handicapper would card. Daly defied medical advice to play but it is not known if his elbow injury flared up again.
