Ljubicic, Canas win Umag openers

The Sports Network Fifth-seeded Croatian star Ivan Ljubicic and sixth-seeded Argentine Guillermo Canas were among Tuesday's first-round winners at the clay-court Croatia Open Umag. Ljubicic leveled Russian Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 6-2, while the 2004 Umag champion Canas handled Chilean Nicolas Massu 7-5, 6-2 at ITC Stella Maris. Eighth-seeded Brazilian Marcos Daniel advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Argentine Carlos Berlocq on Day 2. Additional wins came for Serbian Viktor Troicki, Spaniard Daniel Gimeno- Traver, Argentine Maximo Gonzalez and German Mischa Zverev. On Wednesday, second-round matches will come for top-seeded Spaniard Fernando Verdasco, third-seeded and defending champion Carlos Moya of Spain and seventh-seeded Italian Fabio Fognini.
