'He says things to cheer me up," Sophia Vansluytman was telling us. "He says he can dodge bullets." That's her husband she was talking about, Cpl. Elvis Vansluytman, New York National Guard, whose wife and 6-year-old son sit home in 's "other war" has suddenly intensified, suddenly worsened. And Sophia Vansluytman is just one Guard wife who is all too aware of that, every minute, every day. "I never heard of Afghanistan the way it is now," she said. . "Every day, you wait for that car to pull up in front of the house," she said. Nine more American troops died in Afghanistan the other day, killed in ferocious combat as a Taliban force tried to overrun an outpost on the northeastern frontier. The marauders were unsuccessful.
