The German Formula One Grand Prix returns to the famous Hockenheim track this weekend as part of the rotation between this track and the Nurburgring as hosts of the German leg of the world championship. The historic track was first built in 1932 through the forests of Baden-Wurrtemberg in the south-west of the country, just south of Mannheim, near the River Rhine. That area of Germany has a rich history in motor vehicle manufacturing and Hockenheim was used as a testing track for Mercedes Benz. The original track was over eight kilometres long, featuring four straights of roughly 1.3 km cut through the forests. It was renowned as a track for pure speed, but was not all pedal to the metal, with the Motodrom section built to accommodate the crowds.
