Pontiff gets rock star treatment

LIKE a rock star taking the stage, Pope Benedict XVI arrived to thousands of cheering pilgrims lining the streets for their first glimpse of the Holy Father on Australian soil. With his signature red-suede shoes, the Pope caused widespread rejoicing across Sydney as he touched down to mark the beginning of World Youth Day week. Some of his loudest and proudest followers - 57 Spanish pilgrims from St Therese of Lisieux Church in Barcelona - set the stage for the week ahead singing "Viva Papa" and "Santa Maria" as he passed in a 28-vehicle motorcade. Dressed in their "Benedicto 16" shirts and waving giant Spanish flags, the pilgrims' enthusiasm recalled the celebratory atmosphere of the Sydney Olympics.
