Steve & Barry's to file for bankruptcy protection

BY KRISTALE IVEZAJ • FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER • July 9, 2008 Sportswear company Steve & Barry's LLC, which specializes in discounted collegiate apparel, is expected to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to published reports on Tuesday. The privately held N.Y. based said that it is being represented by a bankruptcy firm and is in negotiations with lenders. Steve & Barry's has more than 260 stores nationwide and sells lost-cost celebrity brands by actresses Sarah Jessica Parker and Amanda Bynes; and baskety player Stephon Marbury, tennis star Venus Williams and golfer Bubba Watson. The company's most recent addition launched in May is a skating and surfing men's collection by surfer Laird Hamilton, who is married professional volleyball player Gabrielle Reece.
