Americans are finding soaring fuel costs hard to swallow. In the world's poorest countries, people are facing starvation. Talk of food quite properly will be on the table during much of this week's Group of 8 economic summit meeting in Japan. Many of the world's poor are facing starvation in a man-made catastrophe created by record oil and food prices. As the head of the World Bank warned last week, it will take people to fix what people have wrought and avert a developing humanitarian disaster that, in turn, threatens to destabilize dozens of poor countries. World Bank President Robert Zoellick called on the leaders of G8 countries to get more aid faster to the countries where it is needed most, saying the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and World Food Program have short-term needs of $10 billion.
