Famed amateur title his after 40-hole final Matt Savage finally regained his putting stroke and posted the biggest victory of his amateur golf career. A 2005 St. Xavier High School product, Savage beat former NCAA champion Jamie Lovemark on the 40th hole Sunday to win the 108th North & South Amateur Championship on the famed No. 2 course at Pinehurst (N.C.) Resort. One of the nation's most prestigious amateur tournaments, the North & South has been won by such golfing luminaries as Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love III, Curtis Strange and Hal Sutton. "It's really special to have my name on the wall in the clubhouse at Pinehurst," Savage said yesterday from Tallahassee, Fla., where he's a senior-to-be at Florida State University.
