Hidden Valley Honey keeps family buzzing

By Marian Bond • business@rgj.com • July 8, 2008 When a swarm of bees invaded their property in Carmichael, Calif., in 1997, Chris and Karen Foster decided to turn a problem into a profit. Beekeeping became a hobby for the family, which included son Ethan and daughter Alyssa. When the family moved to Reno in 2002, they found a home in a relatively rural area with one-quarter acre and room for the eight hives they brought with them. The couple found the area to be business-friendly in many ways, and within a year, they had increased the number of hives and started selling honey under the label Hidden Valley Honey. They now have 70 hives. Chris Foster, a scientist, continues to work for Sierra Sciences LLC, and Karen, a stay-at-home mom, home-schools the teens.
