But in a recent e-mail to me, Jody Gunia of Lansing describes an incident that drives the point home. Gunia acknowledges that MI-Child - the state-administered program for uninsured children - is a "godsend." MIChild allows low-income parents to insure their children for a monthly premium of $10. Gunia's 11-year-old son, Gabriel, was diagnosed with tonsillitis in March. At that time, Gunia said, the doctor recommended a wait-and-see approach. But the condition, has worsened to the point where the kid now feels lousy most of the time. The mother saw summer recess as a perfect time for a tonsillectomy.
