Staff Reports • July 1, 2008 Barack Obama paid a visit to Eastside Community Ministries today to tout his plan for faith-based and neighborhood partnerships. Check back later for more stories, photo galleries and video. Running coverage of Obama's visit • 2:15 p.m.: Not in favor of same-sex marriage but he does favor a very strong civil unions. In terms of hiring, he believes Title VII and state and local laws apply to faith-based groups. We have not passed federal legislation that protects against discrimination based on sexual orientation. But he would expect that state laws already in place would be observed. Need to address rural education with its lower tax base. Starting to see rural children not getting the same resources that, say, suburban kids do.
